The Best Pool Chemicals for Saltwater Pools in New Zealand

The Best Pool Chemicals for Saltwater Pools in New Zealand

Saltwater pools have a reputation for being "low maintenance", and compared with a traditional chlorine pool, they often are. The water feels softer, there's no strong chlorine smell, and your chlorinator does most of the sanitising for you.

But "low maintenance" isn't the same as "no maintenance". A salt chlorinator is only as good as the water it's working with, and New Zealand conditions are tough on pools. We have some of the strongest UV in the world, long summer days, and pollen, leaves and dust blowing in from the garden. Get the basics wrong and you'll end up with cloudy water, a struggling chlorinator, or a green pool just as the school holidays start.

The good news is that you don't need a shed full of products. Five well-chosen chemicals will cover almost everything a saltwater pool needs through a Kiwi summer.

1. Premium Pool Salt: the foundation of your system

Your salt chlorinator turns dissolved salt into chlorine. No salt, no chlorine. Low salt, not enough chlorine (and extra wear on your cell).

Why quality matters: Cheap or impure salt can bring in minerals and other contaminants that cloud the water, stain surfaces and leave build-up on chlorinator cell plates. Backyard Pools Premium Pool Salt is a fine sea salt that dissolves quickly, is low in impurities and suits all saltwater chlorinators.

How to use it:

·        Check your chlorinator's manual for its ideal salt level. It varies between brands and models. Most chlorinators sit between 3000-5000ppm.

·        Test your salt level at the start of the season and after heavy rain, backwashing or topping up with fresh water. All of these dilute your salt. A monthly test is always advisable.

·        Spread the salt around the shallow end with the pump running, and brush any undissolved salt off the floor.

·        Don't overdo it. Too much salt can be just as unhelpful as too little, and the only way to reduce it is to drain some water and refill.

Tip: Salt doesn't get "used up" the way chlorine does. You mainly lose it through splash-out, backwashing and rain overflow, so most pools only need topping up a few times a season.

2. pH Down: the most important product most salt pool owners forget

If there's one thing that catches saltwater pool owners out, it's rising pH. Salt chlorinators naturally push pH upwards as they make chlorine. That's normal, but it's a problem if you ignore it.

Why it matters: Chlorine works best when pH is in the right range. When pH climbs too high, your chlorine becomes much less effective, the water can turn cloudy, and calcium scale starts forming on your pool surfaces and on your chlorinator cell. You can end up with a pool that has plenty of chlorine on paper but still isn't properly sanitised.

Backyard Pools pH Down is a dry, granular sodium bisulphate that lowers both pH and total alkalinity, helping you hold the ideal range of 7.2–7.8. Because it's a granule rather than a liquid acid, it's easier to store and dose, and it isn't classified as a dangerous good for transport or storage, which is a big plus for home pool owners.

How to use it:

·        Test pH at least once a week in summer, and more often in hot weather or after heavy use.

·        Dose according to your pool volume and test readings, adding it evenly with the pump running.

·        When pre-dissolving, always add the product to water, never water to the product.

·        Rinse away any undissolved granules so they don't sit on your pool surface.

·        Re-test after the water has circulated before adding more.

3. Safe T Chlor: shock treatment and sunscreen in one

Even a well-run salt chlorinator sometimes needs backup. After a pool party, a heatwave, heavy rain or a run of phosphates, will cause your pool's chlorine demand can spike faster than the chlorinator can keep up. That's when a shock dose comes in.

Safe T Chlor (Dichlor Granules) delivers a strong chlorine boost to quickly deal with algae and bacteria. The fine, de-dusted granules dissolve fast without leaving residue or clouding the water, and it's suitable as a supplementary chlorine source for saltwater pools.

Why Safe T Chlor works as a "sunscreen" for your pool

New Zealand's UV is brutal, and not just on your skin. Sunlight breaks down unprotected chlorine very quickly, so on a bright summer day a lot of the chlorine your chlorinator makes can disappear before it has a chance to do its job.

Safe T Chlor is a stabilised chlorine. Dichlor contains a built-in stabiliser (cyanuric acid) that stays in the water and acts like sunscreen for your chlorine, shielding it from UV so it lasts longer. That means:

·        Your chlorinator doesn't have to work as hard (or run as long) to keep up.

·        Chlorine levels stay steadier through the hottest part of the day.

·        Your cell may last longer because it's not running flat out all summer.

How to use it:

·        Use it as a shock after heavy swimmer loads, storms, or at the first sign of cloudy or dull water.

·        For ongoing support, one 500g pack every two weeks helps keep chlorine levels steady and algae under control.

·        Keep an eye on your stabiliser level. Because every dose of Safe T Chlor adds a little stabiliser, it builds up over the season. Some stabiliser protects your chlorine, but too much reduces chlorine's effectiveness. Test stabiliser regularly and keep it within the range your chlorinator manufacturer recommends. If you have ORP and pH probes keep your Stabiliser to between 20-30ppm.

4. All Purpose Algaecide: your insurance policy

Algae spores are always blowing into your pool. When chlorine drops, even briefly, they can take hold. Warm water, long sunny days and phosphates from garden runoff all give algae a head start.

Backyard Pools All Purpose Algaecide is a metal-free concentrated algaecide, designed and made right here in New Zealand. It kills green, blue-green, mustard and black spot algae, and it's ideal for salt water and ionised pools. Being metal-free, it won't add copper to your water, so there's no risk of the blue-green staining that copper-based products can cause. It also has a built-in clarifier and works alongside all forms of sanitiser.

How to use it:

·        Prevention: 60 ml per 10,000 litres per week.

·        Heavy growth: 200 ml per 10,000 litres.

·        For best results on an existing algae problem, balance your pH, shock with Safe T Chlor, then add algaecide.

·        Brush walls and floor to break up algae so the product can reach it.

Tip: Keep a bottle in the pump shed. It's the perfect backup for when you're heading away on holiday or the weather has knocked your chlorine around.

5. Clarifying Skimmer Tablets: sparkling water without the fuss

Sometimes your water is balanced and sanitised but still looks a bit dull or hazy. That's usually tiny particles that are too small for your filter to catch.

Clarifying Skimmer Tablets gather those fine particles into bigger clumps, so your filter can trap them. They're fast acting, ideal for newly filled or cloudy pools, and suit sand, glass media and cartridge filters.

How to use it:

·        Drop one tablet into the skimmer basket for pools up to 50,000 litres.

·        Make sure pH is between 7.2 and 7.6 first for best results. This is another reason to keep pH Down on hand.

·        Backwash or clean your filter regularly while using them, as your filter will be catching more particles than usual.

·        Each sock contains 5 x 25 g tablets, so one pack goes a long way.

Putting it all together: a simple saltwater pool routine

When

What to do

Start of season

Test and top up with Premium Pool Salt. Balance pH with pH Down. Shock with Safe T Chlor. Add a heavy dose of All Purpose Algaecide if the pool has been sitting. Pop a Clarifying Skimmer Tablet in the skimmer.

Weekly

Test pH and chlorine. Adjust pH with pH Down. Add a preventative dose of All Purpose Algaecide. Empty skimmer and pump baskets.

Every two weeks

Add Safe T Chlor to boost and protect chlorine levels.

After parties, storms or heatwaves

Shock with Safe T Chlor. Check pH. Add a Clarifying Skimmer Tablet if the water looks dull.

Monthly

Test salt and stabiliser levels. Check and clean your chlorinator cell if you see scale.

The bottom line

A saltwater pool is one of the easiest pools to look after, as long as you support your chlorinator rather than relying on it alone. With Premium Pool Salt as the foundation, pH Down to stop pH creep, Safe T Chlor to shock and protect your chlorine from the sun, All Purpose Algaecide as insurance, and Clarifying Skimmer Tablets for that final sparkle, you'll have everything you need for a clear, comfortable pool all summer long.
