How do I Balance and Care for my Pool or Spa

On a weekly basis, you’ll need to take care of more thorough cleaning and ensure the pool’s chemical levels are properly adjusted. This should only take 20 minutes so if there is MAFs on the telly it’s a perfect opportunity to sneak out and get some pool time in.

What to do:

  • Brush the pool: Use a pool brush to scrub the walls, steps, and floor of your pool. This helps prevent algae build-up and keeps the surfaces free from dirt and grime.
  • Vacuum the pool: After brushing, use an automatic or manual pool vacuum to clean the pool’s floor. This will pick up debris that’s settled at the bottom, keeping your water clear.
  • Test the water and adjust chemicals: Perform a full water test to check the pH, chlorine, alkalinity, and calcium hardness. We supply you with these if you are on our pool or spa subscription. If any of these levels are off, add the appropriate chemicals:
    • If the pH is too high (above 7.8), add a Backyard Pool pH decreaser.
    • If the pH is too low (below 7.2), add a Backyard Pool pH up.
    • For low chlorine levels, add shock and swim or turn on your shock mode on your Chlorinator.
    • If alkalinity or calcium hardness is out of range, use the recommended chemicals to balance them.
  • Check the skimmer and pump basket: Empty the skimmer and pump baskets of debris. A clogged basket can reduce circulation and efficiency.
  • Inspect the equipment: Check the pump, filter, and heater (if applicable) to ensure everything is working correctly. Listen for unusual noises and check for leaks.

That’s a wrap! You’ve nailed it—give yourself a well-deserved pat on the back and kick back with a cold one to celebrate a job well done!
